Bass Lake is a census-designated place in Madera County, California, set within the Sierra National Forest in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, about 14 miles south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park and roughly 55 miles from Fresno. The community takes its name from Bass Lake, a reservoir formed in 1910 when Crane Valley Dam was built on Willow Creek, a tributary of the San Joaquin River. At an elevation of about 3,400 feet, the lake and its surrounding pine forests occupy the transition between the Central Valley and the high Sierra. The lake is the center of life in Bass Lake. Nearly five miles long, it supports fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, and wakeboarding, with sheltered coves for paddling and sailing. An Independence Day fireworks display has been held over the lake since the 1930s, drawing large crowds and cementing the community's identity as a summer recreation destination. Triathlons and other events have added to its recreational profile over the years. Bass Lake functions as a gateway community, pairing its own lake recreation with easy access to Yosemite National Park. Visitors and residents combine a lake vacation with trips into the park, and the area's resorts, campgrounds, and cabin rentals serve both audiences. The community is served by Bass Lake Elementary School for its local students.
