Winnetka is a residential neighborhood in the west-central San Fernando Valley, within the city of Los Angeles in Los Angeles County. Roughly 4.8 square miles in size and home to about 47,000 residents, it sits on the Valley floor bounded by Chatsworth to the north, Northridge to the northeast, Reseda to the east, Woodland Hills to the south and Canoga Park to the west. The area's modern identity began in the early 1920s, when the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce invited poultry farmer Charles Weeks to replicate the one-acre egg farms he had pioneered near Palo Alto. The resulting Weeks Poultry Colony, also known as Runnymede, laid out small farm plots where families could raise chickens and market eggs, an intensive-farming model that made Winnetka briefly famous. As the poultry economy faded, the one-acre parcels were gradually absorbed into residential development. After World War II, Winnetka filled in with single-family ranch homes and apartment buildings as the San Fernando Valley became one of the region's defining suburban landscapes. Today Winnetka is a diverse, largely owner-occupied community of modest homes, local shops and schools. Commercial corridors along Sherman Way, Winnetka Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard carry everyday retail and dining, while the residential streets behind them remain quiet and tree-lined. Its location places residents close to the Warner Center business district in Woodland Hills, Pierce College, and the commercial corridors that run the length of the Valley. The Metro G Line busway provides transit access across the Valley, while the 101 Freeway and canyon routes connect the neighborhood to the Westside, the city of Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Mountains. Winnetka suits buyers and renters seeking a quieter, family-oriented pocket of the Valley with convenient access to jobs, transit and recreation, at a somewhat more approachable scale than several of its neighboring communities.
