El Sobrante is an unincorporated community in western Contra Costa County, California, set in the hills between San Pablo Bay and the inland East Bay. It lies east of the cities of Richmond and San Pablo and is reached primarily by San Pablo Dam Road, which climbs from the bay plain toward the East Bay Municipal Utility District's San Pablo Reservoir. The community's name comes from a Spanish land-grant term meaning "the surplus" or leftover land, reflecting its origins on the unallotted margins of an earlier rancho. As an unincorporated area, El Sobrante is governed by Contra Costa County rather than its own city government, and it retains a more informal, hillside character than its bayfront neighbors. Its neighborhoods climb into the surrounding ridges, offering views and larger, more private lots than are typical closer to the bay. Main roads include San Pablo Dam Road, Valley View Road, and Appian Way, which together structure daily movement through the community.
